Museums in Málaga: where they are, opening hours, prices and a story for each one

A palace chosen to Picasso’s own taste, a baby who was born without crying, a Roman villa hidden beneath the paintings and a tobacco factory that started speaking Russian. Málaga’s museums have opening hours and prices, of course… but they also have stories. We tell you both, museum by museum, in three walks.

Un mapa, tres paseos

One map, three walks

In just over twenty years, Málaga has gone from being «the city where Picasso was born» to being a city of museums. And the best part is that almost all of them are within walking distance of each other, so you can link them up without taking a single bus.

We have grouped them into three walks. The first one through the old town: Picasso Museum, Picasso’s Birthplace, Carmen Thyssen and Museo de Málaga, all less than ten minutes on foot from one another. The second along the port, to the Centre Pompidou on Muelle Uno. And the third heading west, to the old Tabacalera, home to the Russian Museum Collection and the Automobile and Fashion Museum.

Two tips before you set off: several of them are free on Sunday afternoons, and almost all close one day a week (Mondays for the Thyssen, the Museo de Málaga and the Russian Museum; Tuesdays for the Pompidou). We checked every detail on the official websites in November 2026, but hours change with the seasons and public holidays: have a look at each museum’s website before you go.

Museo Picasso: un palacio «antiguo y laico»

Picasso Museum: an «old and secular» palace

Picasso left Málaga at the age of ten and never lived here again, but the city never forgot him. When a home was finally found for a museum of his work, the choice was the Palacio de Buenavista on Calle San Agustín: it stood in the heart of the old town and was, just as Picasso himself had said he wanted, an «old and secular» building.

The King and Queen opened it on 27 October 2003, thanks above all to the works donated by Christine Ruiz-Picasso, the painter’s daughter-in-law, and her son Bernard, Picasso’s grandson. Curiously, the palace already knew what being a museum was like: for decades it housed Málaga’s Fine Arts Museum.

Picasso arriba, fenicios abajo.

And don’t leave without going down to the basement. Remains of Phoenician Malaka are preserved there: part of a house, a stretch of 6th-century BC city wall and a tower. Picasso upstairs, Phoenicians downstairs.

Picasso’s Birthplace: the baby who was born without crying

Five minutes’ walk away, on Plaza de la Merced, is the house where it all began. Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born here on 25 October 1881, at number 36 on the square, which is number 15 today.

The family used to tell that the birth was so difficult that the midwife thought the baby was dead and left him on a table. His uncle Salvador, a doctor, came over smoking and blew a puff of smoke into his face: the baby coughed, cried… and you know the rest. It is a family story, not a medical record, but Málaga still tells it fondly.

Inside you will see the family living room with balconies over the square, 19th-century furniture, photos and childhood objects (baby clothes, a shoe, little lead figures) and a copy of his baptism record, with an endless name: Pablo, Diego, José, Francisco de Paula, Juan Nepomuceno… His father, José Ruiz Blasco, painted mostly birds, and from him Picasso got his fondness for doves, which he painted all his life.

Hours: every day, 9:30 to 20:00, public holidays included (24 and 31 December until 15:00; closed 1 January and 25 December). Price: €3 for the museum and €4 combined with the temporary exhibition; reduced, €2 and €2.50; free for under-18s. Free for everyone: on Sundays from 16:00 to 20:00, and on 28 February, the Noche en Blanco in May, 18 May, 27 September and 25 October, Picasso’s birthday.

Carmen Thyssen: a Roman villa beneath the paintings

Heading down towards Calle Larios, on Calle Compañía, a palace from the late 15th or early 16th century holds the collection of Carmen Cervera, Baroness Thyssen: Spanish painting, above all Andalusian, from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum opened in 2011 in the Palacio de Villalón, named after the family that remodelled it in the 18th century.

The best part, though, lies underneath. In the 1960s the palace went through a renovation that the museum itself calls «the most traumatic», and when it was restored, the remains of a Roman villa and a fish-preserving factory came to light, in use from the 1st to the 5th century, with a monumental fountain decorated with paintings. That is why there is a ticket «with archaeological site»: you can see the paintings… and the Romans.

If you like patios, bullfighters, beaches and scenes of Andalusian life, you will feel right at home here.

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 20:00; closed on Mondays; last entry 30 minutes before closing. Price: €12 general (€15 with the archaeological site); €8 reduced (€10 with the site) for over-65s, students under 26 and residents of Málaga province, among others; free for under-18s. Free: on Sundays from 16:00, according to its website.

Museo de Málaga: the palace the city fought for

Next to the Alcazaba and the Roman Theatre stands the Palacio de la Aduana, the boldest neoclassical building in Málaga. Work began in 1791 and, between one mishap and another, it was not finished until 1829. It was a customs house, a tobacco factory and, for many years, the seat of the Civil Government and a police station. In 1923 a fire left it without a roof.

When the Fine Arts Museum had to leave the Palacio de Buenavista to make room for the Picasso Museum, Málaga was left without a home for its own museum. In 1997, more than fifty associations and groups joined local residents in an unprecedented campaign with a very clear slogan: «The Aduana for Málaga». They got it: the Museo de Málaga opened here on 12 December 2016.

Inside there are two museums in one, Fine Arts and Archaeology, which together cover a good part of the history of Málaga and its province. And it comes with a bonus: it is the cheapest on the list.

Centre Pompidou: a coloured cube by the sea

From the Museo de Málaga to Muelle Uno is a short walk, and at the end a glass cube with coloured panels appears by the water. It is El Cubo, the building of the Centre Pompidou Málaga, which opened on 28 March 2015 as the Paris Pompidou’s first venue outside France.

The cube was built in 2013 and, a year later, the French artist Daniel Buren gave it its current look. Beneath it, at port level, there are 6,000 square metres devoted to 20th- and 21st-century art with works from the Paris collection. The agreement with the city was meant to last five years; in 2025 it was extended for ten more.

For the third walk, head west to the Huelin neighbourhood, near the seafront promenade. There you will find the Tabacalera, the old tobacco factory built in the 1920s in regionalist style, which today brings together two very different museums.

In 2015 the Russian Museum Collection arrived, the first venue in Western Europe of the State Russian Museum of Saint Petersburg. For years the works travelled from Russia, until the invasion of Ukraine and the European Union’s measures cut the relationship. The museum carried on with Russian art from collections in other countries, such as the Russian avant-garde of British collector Jenny Green or the Costakis Collection from MOMus in Thessaloniki.

In November 2025 it was joined by MEET (Tabacalera Exhibition Space), with all kinds of exhibitions, from photojournalism to European masters of the 16th to 18th centuries. The programme changes often, so check its website to see what is on when you go.

Automobile and Fashion Museum: cars wearing hats

In the same building, right next door, is the Automobile and Fashion Museum. It opened in 2010 with the private collection of Portuguese collector João Manuel Magalhães, and it mixes two passions that hardly ever share a room: classic cars and haute couture.

Among cars from different eras you will find hats, dresses and vintage suitcases, as if their owners had just stepped out. It is probably the Málaga museum most loved by people who say they are «not museum people». And it has one advantage: it also opens on Mondays.

Address: Avenida Sor Teresa Prat 15 (Tabacalera building). Hours: Monday to Sunday, 10:00 to 14:30 and 16:00 to 19:00 (24 and 31 December and 5 January, 10:00 to 14:30 only; closed 25 December and 1 and 6 January). Price: €12 general; €10 over-65s; €8 reduced (students, European Youth Card holders, unemployed people, large families, among others); free for children aged 0 to 5. It is a private museum and its website does not list any free days.

Cómo encajarlo todo (y dónde acabar)

How to fit it all in (and where to finish)

If you only have one day, stick to the old town: the Picasso Museum in the morning, the Birthplace and the Thyssen afterwards, and the Museo de Málaga to finish, since it stays open until 21:00 from Tuesday to Saturday. Is it Monday? Then go for the Picasso Museum, the Birthplace, the Pompidou and the Car Museum, which are open that day.

If you are planning to see several municipal museums, there is the Arte Xperience pass: Picasso’s Birthplace, Centre Pompidou and the Russian Museum Collection for one week, for €16.50 (€9.50 reduced). And if contemporary art is your thing, in the Soho district you have the CAC Málaga, in the old wholesale market; check its hours and conditions on the official website.

One last tip. Our VR Free Walking Tour Centro ends right on Plaza de la Merced, next to Picasso’s Birthplace and a stone’s throw from the Picasso Museum. It is a free walking tour with a guide (at the end, everyone gives what they wish), and at some stops you put on virtual reality headsets to see what the city looked like centuries ago. You walk away with Málaga’s history in your head and the museums just around the corner.
