Free tours in Málaga: 3 free tours to understand Málaga when you’re short on time
You have a day, maybe two. Málaga is waiting with three thousand years of history squeezed into a handful of streets, and you don’t want to spend the morning staring at your phone on every corner. That is what free tours are for: a guide, an umbrella held high and a walk that turns stones into stories. Here is how they work and which ones we run.
Busca el paraguas
Look for the umbrella
No llueve.
It’s ten to ten in Plaza de la Marina. The air smells of the sea, the first cruise passengers stroll past and, next to the Tourist Information Office, someone raises a black umbrella. It isn’t raining. It’s the signal: your free tour starts here.
A free tour is a guided tour on foot, in a group, with a guide who knows every corner, and with no fixed price. You book your place for free, you walk, you ask whatever you like and, at the end, everyone gives what they wish: whatever they feel the experience was worth.
It’s the simplest way to understand a city in a short time. In an hour and a half someone puts the centuries in order for you, shows you streets you would never have found and leaves you with a list of places to come back to on your own.
Reservar no cuesta nada
Booking costs nothing
No fixed price doesn’t mean no booking. Groups have a maximum size and it helps the guide to know how many of you are coming. You choose the day, time and language (we run the tours in Spanish and English), leave your name and that’s it: booking is free.
You can cancel for free up to 24 hours before. And if in the end you can’t make it, please cancel even at the last minute: someone else is waiting for that place.
If there are more than ten of you, send us a WhatsApp beforehand so we can organise the group. And on the day, arrive 10-15 minutes early: if you get lost or you’re running late, just message us and we’ll wait.
La voluntad: lo que tú decidas
What you wish: you decide
The walk ends and the usual question pops up: “so how much do people give?”. The honest answer is that there is no set figure. That’s exactly the beauty of a free tour: you decide what it’s worth.
As a rough guide, in Málaga people usually talk about 5 to 10 euros per person, and some give more when they’ve loved the tour. Nobody checks what anyone gives, there are no envelopes and no long faces: you give what you want, freely.
A practical detail: on our old town free tour with headsets you can give in cash or by card. And if you’re travelling as a family, think about how many of you there are; small children usually come along as companions.
Free tour 1: the old town with virtual reality headsets
Our favourite, and one you won’t find anywhere else: the VR Free Walking Tour Centro. It’s a classic free tour, with an official guide, on foot and with what you wish at the end. The extra is that at 4 stops you put on a virtual reality headset and see, in 360° and with sound, a Málaga that no longer exists.
We set off from the Paseo del Parque, a garden laid out at the end of the 19th century on land reclaimed from the sea, and continue along Calle Larios, opened on 27 August 1891 with a triumphal arch and celebrations. We pass the Cathedral and finish in Plaza de la Merced, where Picasso was born in 1881.
Along the way, the headsets take you to Phoenician Málaga, to the Roman Theatre in its heyday, to the capture of the city by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487 and to the Málaga Picasso grew up in. You wear them for a couple of minutes, take them off, smile, and the walk goes on.
It lasts 90 minutes, it is accessible for people with reduced mobility and children use their own headset from age 7 (younger ones share one with an adult). We meet at the Tourist Information Office in Plaza de la Marina.
Free tour 2: el centro, de viva voz
Free tour 2: the old town, told out loud
Would you rather walk without headsets, with just the guide’s voice? That’s what the Free Walking Tour Centro is for: “Málaga through the centuries”, a 90-minute storytelling journey through the old town, with the same meeting point in Plaza de la Marina and the same black umbrella.
One of the stories people love most is that of the Cathedral, which locals call “la Manquita”, the one-armed lady. Work began in the 16th century and stopped in 1782 with one of its two towers half built. You can see it straight away from the street: it’s missing an arm.
So where did the tower money go? A plaque at the foot of the building recalls the most famous version: that it helped the United States win its independence. Historians who have searched the archives point to something less heroic, repairs to the road to Antequera. Your guide will tell you both… and you choose which one to keep.
Free tour 3: Alcazaba y Teatro Romano
Free tour 3: Alcazaba and Roman Theatre
There are few places where a single glance spans a thousand years. At the foot of the hill, the seats of the Roman Theatre, built in the 1st century in the time of Augustus. Above them, the walls of the Alcazaba, the 11th-century Muslim fortress.
Best of all, the theatre lay hidden for centuries. In 1951, gardening work in front of the Casa de la Cultura brought the first stones to light… and it turned out the building had been built on top of it. It wasn’t until it was demolished, in the 1990s, that the theatre could breathe again.
On the Free Walking Tour Alcazaba and Roman Theatre we meet at the Tourist Office next to the Alcazaba and explore it at an easy pace. An important note: the Alcazaba entrance ticket is not included; everyone buys their own at the ticket office by the gate or on the official website before we start. Like every free tour, it ends with what you wish.
And an extra: the Alcazaba with headsets and ticket included
If you want to go one step further, we have a paid option: the VR Walking Tour Alcazaba. For 24 euros per adult you get an official guide, virtual reality headsets and the Alcazaba entrance ticket included: the guide has it and you go in without queuing.
It’s 90 minutes with 3 stops and 11 historical scenes: the Alcazaba of its early centuries, the 14th-century Nasrid palace and the neighbourhoods of Málaga a hundred years ago. You compare what’s in front of you with what used to be there, and understand why this fortress was built the way it was.
There is a reduced rate of 16 euros with proof of eligibility (youth card, over-65s, students, large families…) and children up to 6 go free with an adult. Note: the Alcazaba has slopes and uneven ground, so this tour is not wheelchair accessible.
Si solo tienes un día
If you only have one day
Our tip for making the most of Málaga: in the morning, the old town free tour (with or without headsets) to get the map of the city in your head; and in the afternoon, the Alcazaba and Roman Theatre, as the sun starts to sink over the walls.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and, in summer, something for your head. If you wear prescription glasses, contact lenses are more comfortable for virtual reality, although if your frames aren’t too big they fit inside the headset. Under-16s always come with an adult.
What if it rains? Usually the tour goes ahead anyway, and if it pours we’ll move you to another date. After all, we’re already carrying the umbrella. See you underneath it.
