Málaga Fair: how to get there and survive it
One week in August, thousands of fans fluttering and a question heard in every Málaga home: «so how do we get there?». Here is our guide to enjoying the Feria de Málaga without losing your patience in a traffic jam: where the fair comes from, what happens by day and by night, and how to get around by metro, bus, train or on foot.
Todo empezó con un asedio
It all started with a siege
Ask anyone from Málaga why the city throws a week-long party in the middle of August, heat and all, and the short answer is a date: 1487. That summer the Catholic Monarchs besieged Málaga by land and by sea, and in August the city surrendered. Their entry is remembered every 19 August, which is still a local holiday in Málaga today.
The celebration took shape very early. According to the Municipal Archive, in 1489 a royal decree granted Málaga a market fair, and in April 1491 the town council agreed to hold a fair every year on the feast of the Virgin in August to commemorate the conquest.
So, technically, the Málaga Fair is more than five hundred years old. Granted, with more breaks than a long Sunday lunch.
1887: la feria que vino para quedarse
1887: the fair that came to stay
For centuries the celebration was irregular: some years it happened, some years it didn’t, and sometimes it blended into other religious festivities. Between 1884 and 1886 it was even tied to the Virgen del Carmen, to give it a seafaring feel and attract the first tourists.
The key year was 1887, the fourth centenary of the conquest. In a Málaga hit by economic crisis, phylloxera and earthquakes, the council decided to give the city a proper party: since then the Fair has been held every year, regularly and in a much more festive mood.
From that time come the Fair poster, which in its early years looked back to the centenary, and many customs still alive today: fireworks, bullfights at La Malagueta, devotion to the Virgen de la Victoria and the Historic Parade, which re-enacts the Catholic Monarchs’ entry into the city and returned in 2024 after four years away.
By day: the old town puts on its flamenco dress
The daytime Fair takes place in the old town: Calle Larios, Plaza de la Constitución and the surrounding streets fill with paper lanterns, verdiales bands, flamenco, sevillanas and live music. Flamenco dresses, biznagas (jasmine bouquets), fans working overtime and the odd glass of sweet Málaga wine complete the picture.
Watch the clock: in 2026 the official rules set the Fair in the old town from 12:00 to 18:00, and at six the music in the streets stops. The centre closes early and the party moves to the fairground. Check each year’s rules, as the times can change.
On the first Saturday there is usually a pilgrimage to the Santuario de la Victoria (in 2026, leaving the City Hall at 11:00). And a guide’s tip: use the morning to see the Cathedral, the Alcazaba or the Roman Theatre before the crowds arrive.
Getting to the old town (no car, please)
Golden rule number one: leave the car at home. During the 2026 Fair much of the centre was closed to traffic from 12:00 to 18:00 and only went back to normal at around 21:00. The City Council asks people to use public transport every year.
No vas a ir solo.
Metro: lines 1 and 2 take you to Guadalmedina or Atarazanas, a short walk from Larios. During the Fair it runs special timetables and extra services, and in 2026 it broke its record: 402,131 passengers in eight days. You won’t be alone.
Train: coming from the Costa del Sol, the C-1 commuter line ends at Málaga Centro-Alameda, right next to the old town. From other towns there are the metropolitan transport consortium buses. Within the city, EMT buses add services to the centre; in 2026 a ride with a multi-trip card cost €0.50.
On foot: if you’re staying in the centre, your feet are the best transport. Comfortable shoes, though: the Fair is not the day to break in new ones.
By night: the Real de Cortijo de Torres
When the sun goes down, the party changes stage: the Real de Cortijo de Torres, the big fairground next to the Trade Fair and Congress Centre. It opened in the late nineties (its 25th anniversary was marked in 2023), after the Fair had moved around places such as the Heredia dock and the Parque.
Waiting for you are the illuminated gateway (the 2026 one was inspired by the Cathedral and the lighthouse), street after street of casetas (marquees), rides, food stalls and music until the early hours. According to the 2026 rules, entry to the casetas is free, with no invitation or minimum spend required.
In the afternoon, before the fairground fills up, the Horse and Carriage Parade rides through its streets, one of the loveliest sights of the Fair; in 2026 the route had to be clear by 20:00. Arrive with the last light and you’ll catch the horses and the lights coming on the same day.
Getting to the fairground (and, above all, getting back)
The star is EMT’s line F, linking the centre with the fairground 24 hours a day throughout the Fair. It leaves from the north side of the Alameda Principal, between Calle Larios and Puerta del Mar. In 2026 it cost €2 (the same price since 2022) and you could pay by card.
At night, from 20:00 to 6:00, EMT also runs 16 special lines straight from the neighbourhoods to the fairground, also €2 in 2026. By day, several regular lines (4, 18, 19, 20 and 22) stop at the fairground at the normal fare. The EMT Málaga app tells you when the next one is due.
Commuter train: the nearest station is Victoria Kent, served by the C-1 and C-2. In 2026 Renfe ran C-1 trains every 20 minutes on the busiest nights and early-morning departures from Victoria Kent. Metro: from Ciudad de la Justicia or La Luz-La Paz it’s about a 20-minute walk, according to the City Council.
Taxi: there are two ranks open 24 hours, by the gateway (Avenida de las Malagueñas) and in the north area (Avenida de Ortega y Gasset). A car? In 2026 there were 3,185 parking spaces nearby, but also road closures from 20:00. And accept it: the queue home at four in the morning is part of the experience.
Manual de supervivencia feriante
A fairgoer’s survival guide
Agua y sombra, siempre.
Water and shade, always. August in Málaga shows no mercy, and the City Council even has a protocol for the hottest days. Sweet wine goes down easily… and hits all at once: alternate with water.
Bring a card: you can pay by card on the Fair buses, so no hunting for coins in the small hours. And agree on a meeting point with your group (the gateway is a classic) in case your phone runs out of battery.
Pace yourself: it lasts eight days. The seasoned fairgoer hits the centre at midday, takes a strategic siesta and returns to the fairground full of energy. The amateur gives it everything on Saturday and has ceased to exist by Monday.
And one important thing: the old town is also home to a lot of people. Enjoy, sing and dance, but look after the streets and the neighbours. The Fair belongs to everyone.
¿Cuándo es la Feria de 2027?
When is the 2027 Fair?
As of today, 2 November 2026, the City Council has not yet published the dates of the 2027 Fair. It is usually held in mid-August, in the week of the 15th: in 2026 it ran from Saturday 15 to Saturday 22, with fireworks the night before to get things going.
What is confirmed is that 19 August 2027 will be a local holiday in Málaga. For the exact dates and the transport plan, which changes every year, check the City Council’s official Fair website (malaga.eu) and those of EMT, Metro de Málaga and Renfe Cercanías a few days beforehand.
Y si te quedas con ganas de 1487…
And if you’re left wanting more of 1487…
This whole celebration, with its lanterns, its casetas and its queues, marks something that happened more than five centuries ago a few steps from Calle Larios: the siege, the surrender and the entry of the Catholic Monarchs into Málaga in 1487.
