How to choose the best free tour in Málaga (and what a free tour actually is)

The short answer: the best free tour is the one led by a licensed guide, that passes the Roman Theatre and the Alcazaba, lasts an hour and a half and makes it clear from the start that booking is free and that, at the end, you give what you feel it was worth. Here we explain what a free tour actually is, what to look at when choosing one and what ours is like, so you can compare.

01

Qué es exactamente un free tour

What a free tour actually is

A free tour is a guided walk where booking costs nothing and there is no fixed price: at the end, each person gives the guide what they feel it was worth. In cash or by card, whatever each person can and wants to. No more, no less.

That changes two things compared with a paid visit. First, the guide earns the tip with the tour itself, so they tend to work hard to make it good. Second, the booking is a commitment: the guide is counting on you, so if you are not going to make it, cancel. Almost all free tours in Málaga are booked online, on the organiser’s website or on platforms such as GuruWalk or Civitatis, and are free to cancel.

What a free tour is not: it is not “free” in the sense that nothing is expected at the end, and it is not a second-rate tour either. In Málaga there are free tours with excellent guides, and paid tours with weak ones. That is why it pays to look a little before choosing.

Cinco preguntas antes de reservar

Five questions before you book

1. Who leads the tour? In Andalusia, explaining inside the monuments requires a guide licensed by the regional government. A licensed guide can go into the Alcazaba or the Roman Theatre with you; an unlicensed one stays at the gate. If the organiser doesn’t say so on their website, ask.

2. Where does it go? A free tour of central Málaga that skips the Roman Theatre and the Alcazaba leaves out the best part. Check where it ends too: ideally near something you want to see next (the Picasso Museum, the Cathedral), not just anywhere.

3. How long is it? An hour and a half is about right for the old town. Under an hour is too short; over two, in Málaga’s heat, drags.

4. In which language and with how many people? A tour in Spanish and English at the same time tells half the story in each language. And with thirty people you can’t hear the guide: ask how many places the group has.

5. What do the reviews say? Not the score, which almost everyone has a good one of, but the content: whether they name the guide, whether they say they learned something, whether they warn it was a walk with little substance.

Cómo es el nuestro, para que compares

What ours is like, so you can compare

Our free tour is the VR Free Walking Tour of the old town. It leaves from the Tourist Office at Plaza de la Marina (look for the black umbrella), goes along the Paseo del Parque, past the gate of the Museum of Málaga, the Roman Theatre and the gate of the Alcazaba, and ends at Postigo de San Agustín, next to the Picasso Museum. It lasts 90 minutes, in Spanish or in English, with a guide licensed by the Regional Government of Andalusia.

What makes it different are the four virtual reality stops: at four points along the way you put on glasses and see that very spot as it was in another era, in 360° and with sound. The scenes are made by our own studio in Málaga. The glasses are for ages 7 and up; younger children look with an adult.

Booking is free, on our website or on GuruWalk and Civitatis, and can be cancelled at no cost. At the end, next to the Picasso Museum, everyone gives what they feel it was worth.

Cuánto se deja al final

How much to give at the end

It is the question we get asked most and the one with the least fixed answer: whatever you feel it was worth. There is no right figure. Think about what you made of the tour and what you would pay for an hour and a half with someone who has prepared the city to tell it to you, and give accordingly. Cash or card both work.

The only thing we ask, for us and for any free tour: if you book, come, and if you can’t, cancel. That is what lets the guide keep turning up every day at Plaza de la Marina with the umbrella.

And if the Alcazaba leaves you wanting more

The free tour passes the gate of the Alcazaba but does not go in. To see it inside we run the VR Walking Tour Alcazaba, which is not a free tour: it costs €24 per adult and €16 per child, with the ticket included and no queues, and at three stops the glasses show you the palaces as they were. Many people do the free tour in the morning and the Alcazaba in the afternoon: the last tour leaves at 16:00.
