Málaga Cathedral: the story of «la Manquita» and how to visit in 2026
Málaga Cathedral is missing a tower, and locals fondly call it «la Manquita», the one-armed lady. Behind that nickname lies a mosque, two and a half centuries of building work, a legend that crosses the Atlantic and a roof that took more than two hundred years to arrive. We tell it like a tale, with the facts checked. And at the end, everything practical you need to visit.
Antes de la catedral, una mezquita
Before the cathedral, a mosque
Once upon a time there was a Málaga that prayed facing Mecca. In the heart of the medina, inside the walls, stood its great mosque, the aljama: the place where the whole city gathered on Fridays.
In August 1487, after a very long siege, the Catholic Monarchs conquered Málaga. They did not tear the mosque down: they turned it into a church. It was consecrated as Santa María de la Encarnación, the same name the cathedral still bears today.
For decades, Málaga’s people heard mass among arches designed for another faith, with a few Gothic additions to adapt them. Almost nothing of that mosque can be seen today. But the orange-tree courtyard next to the Sagrario church still recalls the courtyards of Andalusí mosques.
Un sueño del Renacimiento
A Renaissance dream
But a growing city wanted a cathedral to match. In 1528 work began on a new church, on the very site of the old mosque.
That year Enrique Egas, one of the great masters of the time, came to Málaga to examine the site and the plans. The stonemason Pedro López directed the foundations of the east end. And the name usually given as the author of the design is Diego de Siloé, the architect of Granada Cathedral.
Here comes the first «depending on who tells it». The Chapter’s website credits Siloé with the original design, but his drawings have not survived, and some historians prefer to speak of an undocumented authorship shared among several masters. What nobody disputes is the dream: a huge Renaissance cathedral, with Corinthian columns and soaring vaults.
Dos siglos y medio de obras
Two and a half centuries of work
Building something like that was hugely expensive and painfully slow. Andrés de Vandelvira, Diego de Vergara and his son, and a long list of master builders all worked on it. In August 1588, with only the east end standing, a temporary wall was built to close off what existed and the cathedral was consecrated. Half-finished, but consecrated.
In the 17th century the work almost came to a halt. The best of that period is inside: the choir stalls, for which the sculptor Pedro de Mena carved, from 1658, some forty figures of saints.
Work resumed in 1721. José de Bada and later Antonio Ramos raised the rest of the church and the façade, with the design reviewed by the Madrid architect Ventura Rodríguez. In 1768 the cathedral finally opened for worship as we know it. Shortly afterwards came its two great organs, built by Julián de la Orden between 1779 and 1781, with more than four thousand pipes.
The cathedral with a missing arm
And then, in 1782, the work stopped completely. It never started again.
Stand in Plaza del Obispo and look at the façade. You’ll see it straight away: on the left, the north tower, finished, 84 metres high (92 if you count up to the weathervane). On the right, the south tower, which stopped halfway.
Málaga’s people, who have a gift for nicknames, christened it «la Manquita»: the cathedral with a missing arm. The nickname has stuck so well that today it’s hard to picture it with two towers.
The tower wasn’t the only thing left undone. The roof, the main sacristy, part of the decoration and the pediment of the façade were never finished either. But what you see from the street is the tower. So why was it left like that? This is where the best part of the tale begins.
La leyenda del dinero para América
The legend of the money for America
The version you hear most, and will surely hear on some café terrace, goes like this: the money for the tower crossed the Atlantic to help the North American colonies in their war of independence against Britain.
The legend has good ingredients. Spain really did help the rebels, and two men from Málaga had a lot to do with it. Bernardo de Gálvez, born in Macharaviaya, fought the British from Louisiana, and the Texan city of Galveston is named after him. Luis de Unzaga, born in Málaga and governor of Louisiana, got aid through to Washington’s men.
To round it off, next to the cathedral, in the Sagrario courtyard, there is a plaque from the American society Sons of the American Revolution thanking Gálvez for his help. Many people take it as the final proof.
But careful: it is a 20th-century plaque, not an 18th-century document. To find out where the money went, you have to go down to the archive.
Lo que dicen los papeles
What the papers say
Historians who have worked with the documents tell a different story: less epic, more bookkeeping.
From the early 18th century, the work was paid for mainly through an «arbitrio», a tax the Crown allowed on goods shipped from the port: wine, raisins, olive oil. According to the studies by art historian Rosario Camacho quoted in heritage catalogues, the budget was miscalculated and the money gradually ran out.
In 1782 that tax was definitively withdrawn from the cathedral and redirected to other works to modernise the country, above all the roads linking Málaga with Antequera and Vélez-Málaga. Some sources add the Colmenar road and the San Telmo aqueduct, which around those years began bringing water to the city.
So is the American story an invention? Here the sources don’t fully agree. Heritage records based on the archive say clearly that the money went to the roads and not to the independence of the United States. Other texts argue that part of it may indeed have ended up in that aid, through Unzaga and his family. What we have not found is any document saying «the money for this tower, to Washington».
Our view, after telling this story many times on the street: la Manquita simply ran out of money, like almost every great building project in history. Although we admit the American version is much more fun to tell.
Doscientos años sin tejado
Two hundred years without a roof
There is another secret you can’t see from the square: Málaga Cathedral spent more than two centuries without a roof. Its vaults, more than forty metres up, were left exposed to the weather, protected only by their own stone.
Back in the 1760s Ventura Rodríguez had proposed a pitched roof, but it was never built. Over the years water got in: leaks, falling fragments and even safety nets hung inside. Repairs from 2006 to 2010 and in 2015 never fully solved it.
The cathedral turned its problem into an attraction: in 2015 it opened its rooftops to the public. Up the north tower staircase, more than two hundred steps, you climbed to almost fifty metres to walk above the vaults, with all of Málaga at your feet.
Now the story is changing. In April 2024 the first beam of the new roof was hoisted into place. The works, with an investment of 22.5 to 23 million euros from public bodies, the Church, companies and donors, were halfway through in early 2026 and are due to finish at the end of 2027. The project also includes completing the façade pediment designed by Antonio Ramos. The south tower is not part of the plan: la Manquita will stay one-armed.

And the one-armed lady lived happily ever after
More than five hundred years after a mosque became a church, the cathedral is still there: with its tower and a half, its cranes and its new roof halfway on. A building that, deep down, has never stopped being built.
We see it almost every day. Our VR Free Walking Tour Centro stops in front of the cathedral, and there we tell you the story of the missing tower and the American legend… and ask which one you believe. It is a free walking tour with a guide, and at the end everyone gives whatever they feel it was worth.
And at some stops along the way you put on a virtual reality headset and see what that very place looked like centuries ago. Because some stories make more sense when, as well as hearing them, you see them.
