Juan de Málaga Street and the surname born in 1487

There is a street in Málaga so narrow you almost have to walk through it sideways. No one would guess it hides a tale of sieges, keys and baptisms… or that its name began to be written one summer more than five hundred years ago, when a merchant had to choose between his city and his word.

Érase una vez un comerciante

Once upon a time, a merchant

Once upon a time, in the 15th century, there was a Málaga that looked out to sea. It was the great port of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, and silks, raisins, almonds and ceramics came and went from its docks to the whole Mediterranean.

In that city lived Ali Dordux. He was no king and no warrior: he was a merchant, and a rich one. He owned ships, did business in faraway ports and his family was among the most respected in Málaga. When Ali spoke, people listened.

El verano del cerco

The summer of the siege

But in the spring of 1487 the horizon filled with sails and tents. The Catholic Monarchs had surrounded Málaga by land and by sea.

Up in Gibralfaro castle, the commander Hamet el Zegrí swore the city would never surrender. Down in the streets, the weeks went by and everything began to run out: first the bread, then the water, then the hope.

And then Ali Dordux made a decision. With other neighbours, he left the city and walked to the Christian camp, the «real», to speak to the Monarchs face to face.

La llave de la ciudad

The key to the city

In August 1487, Málaga surrendered. For most of its people, the ending was terrible.

Not for Ali and his family. The Monarchs rewarded his part in the negotiation with houses, orchards and land, and years later made him mayor and chief magistrate of the Muslim communities who stayed in the area.

The chronicles say he was asked to be baptised, and that he always refused. He remained Ali until the end of his days.

¿Traidor o héroe?

Traitor or hero?

And here the tale splits in two, depending on who tells it.

For some, Ali Dordux was a traitor: he negotiated with the enemy while others held the walls, and came out ahead when his city lost everything.

For others, he was a quiet hero: he saw the battle was lost and chose to negotiate rather than watch his people starve. He saved what he could, starting with his own.

History doesn’t have to give us the answer. What do you think? After telling this story many times on the street, we think Ali was above all a man in an impossible moment… and that is why his story still gets people talking five hundred years later. When you join the tour, we’d love to hear your verdict.

Un bautizo con padrinos reales

A baptism with royal godparents

Ali was never baptised, but his son Mohammed was. One day, together with his wife, he stepped up to the font and came away with new names: Fernando and Isabel, the same as the Monarchs, who were their godparents.

And just as someone who changes their life changes their name, he changed his surname too. From that day on the family was no longer Dordux: it was «de Málaga».

06

Un escudo para un apellido nuevo

A coat of arms for a new surname

With the surname came gifts from the Crown: a coat of arms (with lions, bars and pomegranates, according to the genealogies), entry into the Castilian nobility and posts such as alderman of Granada.

The city’s name passed from parents to children like an heirloom, and the «de Málaga» family served the kings for generations.

And the street lived happily ever after

If you stroll along the Cortina del Muelle today, next to the port, look for a tiny street where two people barely fit. It is Calle Juan de Málaga, one of the narrowest in the old town.

It is named after a descendant of that family: Ali Dordux’s grandson or great-grandson, depending on who you ask. More than five centuries later, the surname born with the surrender of the city is still there, written on a street sign, waiting for someone to stop and read it.
